I am Dr. Angelina Yiu (pronouns: she/her) and I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (#2477). I provide evidence-based assessment and treatment of mental health for adults.
Individuals who seek therapy may be feeling stuck, suffer from painful emotions and experiences, or seek to make changes in their life but don’t know how. I believe that therapy can help you to compassionately identify what is or is not helpful for you, reduce suffering, and to move forward in a way that is aligned with your personal values. I aim to provide care that is affirming, respectful and inclusive of diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to, gender, sexual, and cultural identities.
I work from the perspective that therapy does not give you the answers, but helps you to identify and remove barriers from living in a values-congruent way. Some barriers might be fear, self-criticism, depression, emotional numbing, avoidance, low self-worth or a belief that you need to "be" a certain way to be accepted. I also view ineffective behaviours (e.g., self-harm, anger outbursts, disordered eating) as coping that may no longer serve you for painful emotions. We will work together to better understand these barriers so that you can live a life that is more content, fulfilling and consistent with your personal values.
